San Francisco Bay Area Armenian National Committee
Annual Report June 2002-July 2003

During the June 2002-July 2003 year, the San Francisco-Bay Area Armenian National Committee was active in various fields: grass-roots activism, community events organizing, and political lobbying. In addition to its ongoing and annually scheduled events, the committee organized or participated in political activities regularly throughout the year.

Committee meetings took place on average once every two weeks, with an active membership of 12. Several ongoing projects achieved fruition this year: The Genocide Education Project is now complete, with published lesson plans for 10th grade history students; AB 2003, the Holocaust and Genocide Education bill was passed; and the California Armenia Trade Office bill was passed.

GRASS-ROOTS ACTIVISM

Bazaar: A booth was set up at the annual St. Gregory Church Bazaar. Names were collected to broaden our mailing list and hundreds of letters to U.S. Senators Feinstein and Boxer regarding aid to Armenia was collected.

Armenian Genocide Commemoration: The ANC hosted a BBC documentary film screening at the SF Public Library, "Armenia: The Betrayed," presented by producer Phillip Wearne. The ANC participated in the Armenian Genocide Commemorative Committee, and acted as liaison with city officials.

The ANC initiated an Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day resolution in San Francisco (including a letter from the Board of Supervisors to President Bush). The ANC also worked with Supervisor Peskin to pass a resolution calling on Congressman Lantos to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

In Santa Clara County, the ANC worked with the Board of Supervisors on its Armenian Genocide commemoration resolution and several ANC members participated in the commemoration program at St. Andrew church.

In Berkeley, the ANC student members passed an Armenian Genocide commemoration resolution and organized April 24th-week activities on campus.

In Pleasant Hill where a sister-city agreement with Merzifon, Turkey has been in effect for two years, the ANC developed a plan-of-action and drafted letters to City Council members for the successful passage of a resolution formally recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

At UC Davis, Aram Kouyoumdjian spoke on behalf of the ANC at an Armenian Genocide vigil organized by the students.

At Stanford, the ANC secured letters from Mayor Brown and Palo Alto Councilman Ojakian to the Stanford newspaper, complaining about their publication of denialist articles by Turks. The ANC also initiated a successful e-mail campaign targeted at the paper’s editors.

"Ararat": The ANC conducted an e-mail campaign urging people to see the movie "Ararat." ANC members passed out flyers at local theaters informing moviegoers about the film.

"System of a Down": ANC members staffed an ANC booth at two concerts by "System of a Down" rock group, informing concertgoers about the Armenian Cause.

California Democratic Convention: ANC members staffed an ANC booth at the state’s Democratic Party convention in Sacramento, informing delegates and the public about the Armenian Cause.

Museum of Tolerance: In addition to an e-mail campaign encouraging people to write letters of complaint to the Museum of Tolerance about the lack of the Armenian Genocide in the museum, ANC members meeting with Assemblyman Aghazarian secured his promise to write an official letter to the museum.

Aid to Armenia: The ANC conducted a letter-writing campaign to encourage Congress to keep the previous years $90 million foreign aid allocation for Armenia.

California-Armenia Trade Bill: The ANC lobbied Bay Area public officials to voice their opinion to the Governor’s office on the Trade Office contract. Due to the California budget crisis, all existing trade offices have been nullified, but the ANC is working with public officials to retain the CA-Armenia Trade Office, which does not require public funding.

ANCA-WR: Members Ara and Roxanne Makasdjian attended a regional ANC meeting attended by members of other ANC chapters in the Western Region, to discuss priorities and strategy. ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian gave a status report about efforts in Washington, and Congressman Adam Schiff addressed the group.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Hai Tad Evening (March): ANC hosted its annual "Hai Tad Evening" Treasure Island, with special guests, Europe ANC chairwoman Hilda Tchoboyan and ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian. Local ANC supporters Art and Margit Hazarabedian were honored for their great contributions to Hai Tad and the Armenian community.

Prof. Israel Charney: The ANC and the Holocaust Center jointly hosted a lecture by genocide scholar Israel Charney in November.

Generation Y: The ANC organized an event in Berkeley in May targeted at Armenian-American youth. Assemblyman Simitian and ANC WR Board Chairman Raffi Hamparian addressed the group.

September 11: ANC member Roxanne Makasdjian was Master of Ceremonies at the 9/11 commemoration held at Mt. Davidson Cross by the Council of Armenian American Organizations of Northern California. The ANC secured the presence of various public officials at the event.

Mt. Davidson Reception: The ANC helped secure the attendance of local public officials at a reception celebrating those individuals who were helpful during the long legal battle to acquire Mt. Davidson Cross. In April, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal of the decision approving the Cross’s sale to the Council of Armenian-American Organizations of Northern California.

POLITICAL LOBBYING

Members Haig Baghdassarian and Raffi Momjian spearheaded the effort to get Bay Area Congress members signed on to the Genocide bill in Congress and the bill normalizing US-Armenia trade relations. They sent letters to representatives and met with several personally.

Fundraisers:

Brown: ANC member Ani Baghdassarian attended a breakfast fundraiser for Mayor Willie Brown in San Francisco

Perata: ANC members attended a fundraiser for State Sen. Don Perata in San Francisco.

Yee: The ANC had a meeting with Supervisor Leland Yee during his Assembly campaign and later hosted a fundraising reception at Vaspouragan Hall.

Washington, D.C.: ANC member Mark Markarian attended the ANCA's Congressional Armenian Genocide Commemoration, where he also had individual meetings with representatives and their staff.

Ambassador’s Visit: Despite the poor organization of US Ambassador to Armenia’s visit to the Bay Area, the ANC was able to organize a strong meeting between Amb. Ordway and representatives of our sister organizations at KZV school (June).

ONGOING INITIATIVES

Genocide Curriculum Project: The ANC's Education Sub-committee, in cooperation with the San Francisco Unified School District has completed comprehensive lesson plans on the Armenian Genocide for public school students. The lessons have been approved by the district’s curriculum development department and distributed to San Francisco’s history teachers. The ANC is now developing a plan for wide distribution in a way that may best insure its broad use.

The ANC is developing a grant proposal by which the Education Project may acquire funding from outside sources for its distribution and implementation.

ANC members Raffi Momjian and Roxanne Makasdjian will be joining a meeting with the CA Superintendent of Schools and Assemblyman Steve Samuelian to discuss better implementation of Armenian Genocide instruction.

AB2003: The Holocaust-Genocide Education Bill, for which the ANC worked with Assemblyman Koretz and Wyman to formulate was passed by the state legislature. The bill will create a "Center of Excellence," through which Holocaust and genocide instructional materials will be developed, and teacher training will take place. The center will be governed by a task force appointed by the governor and other agencies. ANC WR Board member Levon Kirakossian has been appointed to the task force, and member Roxanne Makasdjian’s name has been submitted to the governor for consideration.

Armenian Students Associations: ANC members met with the Armenian Students Associations of UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Stanford universities, to inform them about Hai Tad’s activities. Relations with these groups are at the best that they’ve been in recent years, with strong collaboration. The ANC was involved with each group closely in the organization of their Armenian Genocide activities.

Fundraiser: The ANC is currently planning a fundraising reception for Armenian Caucus co-chairman, Rep. Frank Pallone, for August 17.
